    that--------should

    Hi,

1- It is amazing that the old man should be able to run so fast.

2- It is amazing that the old man be able to run so fast.

3- It is amazing that the old man can run so fast.

Could you please tell me if there is any difference in the meaning between the sentences I have written above?

    Thanks.

1 and 3 mean the same. #2 is incorrect.

However, in 2, if you change "be" to "is" you'd be okay.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

This one has been bugging me. Why would this one not work as the subjunctive? The word amazing sets up an unrealistic or hypothetical possibility.

Well, it's set up as a real thing - it's amazing that he can do it - so it's not unreal, and it's not a command, so the subjunctive doesn't work.
