Please, help me find the appropriate prepositions in the following sentences.

1-This news will make him buck down/off a bit.
2- The sea is gaining to/? the land.
3- The emergency called __ the reserves which she possessed.
4- He was fiddling ___ with car engine.

No, sir. I read these unsolved sentences in a local book. Actually, I teach Literature in a college. Learning English grammar is a hobby for me.

1 - This news will make him [strike]buck[/strike] back down/off a bit.
2 - The sea is gaining to/? the land.
3 - The emergency called __ the reserves which she possessed.
4 - He was fiddling ___ with his/the car engine.

Please see the amendments I have made to your post above. I don't know if the exercises in the book were poorly written or if you copied them incorrectly. You need to try to complete the exercise yourself first and then we can tell you know if you got them right or wrong.

I can tell you that "to" is incorrect in #2.

For info, #3 is rather strangely worded. I would have given either:

The emergency called ______ all the reserves she possessed.
The emergency called ______ all her reserves.

There are two potential answers.
