When to use Past Perfect Simple

Hi, I never used Past Perfect Simple. usually I only use Simple Past or Present Perfect Simple. how and when to use Past Perfect Simple?

For example: If I had seen him, I would have talked to him.
Usually I say: If I saw him, I would tell him. or If I saw him, I would have told him.

And here is even more complicated: Past Perfect Progressive
I have never used this in my life, I think it is based on Past Perfect Simple, right?
    e.g. He had been speaking.

Can anyone give me an example? When to use?
