    Jennifer mentioned Vs. Jennifer said

Direct speech = Jennifer said, "I need to renew my passport."

    Hello teachers,
If I write "mentioned" instead of "said", then is the sentence correct?

I mean: Jennifer mentioned, "I need to renew my passport."

    Thank you

No, that wouldn't be natural. You could write "Jennifer mentioned that she needed to renew her passport".
