    2. Indirect = The chef said to add two eggs and stir the mixture.

    Hello teachers,

This is written in my book:

    1. Direct = The chef said, “Add two eggs and stir the mixture.”
    2. Indirect = The chef said to add two eggs and stir the mixture.

This is my question: Can sentence number 3 or 4 or 5 be correct to be replaced with number 2?

I have made three other alternatives for number 2:

    3. Indirect = The chef said to me to add two eggs and stir the mixture.
    4. Indirect = The chef commanded to add two eggs and stir the mixture.
    5. Indirect = The chef commanded me to add two eggs and stir the mixture.

Can 3 or 4 or 5 be replaced with 2 or not?

    Thank you.

    No.

In #3 the chef told you to add the eggs. In #1 he is giving a general instruction.

#4 and #5, 'commanded' is too strong a word to replace 'said'.
