Hi,
I saw a test in one of the web sites but couldn't make head of that. I think there is something wrong with the test.
This is the test:

2. What punctuation mark needs to be added to the following sentence in DIRECT speech

James asked "Are you coming to my house today?"

A. .
B. :
C. !
D. ,

Source: Direct and Indirect Speech Quiz

We should just use the question marl (?) but the options have made me confused.
Would you please clarify it to me?

Thank you.

The question is asking about punctuation after "asked".

And the modern trend is to have no punctuation after 'asked'.

Yes, many people believe that the punctuation marks themselves create the needed break in the sentence.

Thaks every body. 5JJ, I couldn't understand your meaning by saying "5".
What did you mean by 5?

"5" is 5jj's signature (shortened). He made an amendment to your original sentence in the quote box above where he wrote "5". Look at it again.

If you QUOTE somebody's post, as I have just done, above, you need to write at least one letter/number below the quotation before you can submit it. On my last post, I added something inside the quotation, but had nothing to say outside it. So, I added my signature - or part of it.
