    Tense

    Hi,
I am new to English grammar and looking for someone, who can explain in which tenses the following sentence are in.

    1) He lashed out with his power, engulfing the entire area in flames.
    2) The vast number of dead bodies lying in the large pools of blood made it
even more unpleasant for him to stand on the hill, overlooking the bloody
scene below, but it had to be done.

    Thank you in advance,
    Tinku92.

All the verbs in those sentences are past tense. There are also other verb-like words in those sentences (-ing words). They are present participles, but not verbs.
