    Reconcile...with?

"To my friends on the right, I ask you to reconcile your commitment to America’s military might with a failure to act when a cause is so plainly just. To my friends on the left, I ask you to reconcile your belief in freedom and dignity for all people with those images of children writhing in pain, and going still on a cold hospital floor."

    Q1. What does "
reconcile with" mean in both sentences?
Q2. What commitment is he talking about?

Thank you so much for your help.

    1. Have you looked up "reconcile" in a dictionary?
    2. The political right in the US is famous for supporting the military and its members. The stereotype is that the right likes to spend on defense, while the left likes to spend on education, welfare and other "social programs"

I looked it up but still don't get it. Can I put it this way? "If the right still wants to strengthen the US military, then they should authorize the use of force against Syria."

It's more about the principle of having a powerful military and using America's power for good.

In Obama's mind, if you want to have a strong military that means you should always want to drop bombs and kill people.

    Not a very good argument.
