Looking for a verb or an expression...

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a verb or expression describing either an action or a quality in the following situations. I'd appreciate it if you could give me any possible option. I'm writing, by rough, some word-by-word translation of the expressions I have in mind, and hope you won't mind this.

    1. When a child (usually the pampered ones, or maybe the cute ones!) or a baby knows how to win their parents' heart; how to gain their attention; how to show some cute behaviour to influence their parents, etc. In persian, we may use the same words for some pets, say kittens, when they try to approach their owners trying to get their attention!

    2. When a spiritual leader knows how to influence their people; how to make them believe in them indirectly, etc.

    Many thanks.

    Not a teacher!

This might not be exactly what you are looking for, but these words came to my mind while reading your descriptions:

    1. spoiled brat

    2. charisma, brainwash

Thanks. About the first one, is there any verb used informally?

I don't like 'spoiled brat' for #1. Such a child is manipulative, can charm the birds from the trees, can wind you round their little finger.

A charismatic, inspirational leader can have his audience in the palm of his hand.

Thank you so much. Would 'he charmed the pants off her!' be very informal to use? And, is this 'pants' the British or American usage?! ;)))

Yes, it would. It's definitely British, and I think American too. They'll correct me later if I'm wrong.

In the context you give, it would be informal, but wouldn't refer to clothing.
