    far up a hollow

Hi, I have never been to West Virginia, maybe that's why I can't understand what does "far up a hollow" means
“The southern part of West Virginia, so far up a hollow the birds feared to go."
Thank you in advance for explaining me.

    not a teacher

In this sense, a "hollow" is a valley between mountains; so the phrase means "so far up a valley that even the birds are afraid to go there".

    Re: far up a hollow

But I have read that West Virginia is a "mountain state" ... And "up" means rather to higher position...

    Re: far up a hollow

To "go up a valley" means to travel along the valley further into the mountains, following the course of a river, for example. In this case you will probably get a little higher as you go, but you can drive up the highway or walk up a street without necessarily meaning that you are getting higher at all.
