Degas is most famous for his paintings

An explanation for "Degas ismostfamousfor his paintings" says that this is a superlative within himself, not the superlative compared to others,, for which "the most famous" is needed. Is it true? Does it just mean "only dancer paintings of his made his highest fame"?

6)Dancers ? Degas’ Favorite Subject Today, Degas is most famous for his paintings of young dancers. Degas liked to paint dancers [because / because of] he wanted [to show / showing] movement in his paintings. My favorite painting is Dancer on Stage.

He is known more for his paintings of dancers than for anything else.
