    Why THE? With some examples.

Why do we use THE and not A in the following cases (marked bold)? Took them from some lectures in world history. This is odd to me because we don't talk about specific "apparatuses" or "opportunities" or whatever. We talk about them as general concepts. Could somebody explain? Thanks in advance.

    1. "Many societies in which the apparatus of civilization was fairly new used the opportunity provided by contacts with neighboring older
societies to copy aspects of culture, technology, and social structure."

    2. "
Finally, the process of imitation did not extend well to politics."

    3. "The increase of interregional trade in the postclassical centuries created and reflected a number of changes."

    4. "The new range and intensity of contacts was, along with the spread of world religions, a crucial development in the postclassical period, affecting most of Asia and many parts of Africa and Europe."

    5. "The rise of agriculture was one of the great changes in the human experience."

    6. "Between the emergence of humans about 2.5 million years ago until about 11,000 years ago, our species was involved in hunting and gathering."

    7. "Classical Mediterranean civilization did not, until the advent of Christianity, produce a major religion."

    8. "First is the increasing place of the West in world trade and, to a lesser extent, in world power politics."

Re: Why THE? With some examples.

In most cases here, they're talking about unique things- there was only one advent of Christianity, one global rise of agriculture, etc.

Thank you, Tdol, for such a prompt reply!
And if the case is different. For example (taken from one economic report):

"The GLobal Competitiveness Index is designed to evaluate the potential of countries to grow over the medium to longer term, taking into account present level of development, based on the understanding that competitiveness is "the set of institutions, policies and factors that determine the level of productivity of a country."
"The size of the market affects productivity because large markets allow firms to exploit economies of scale."
"The GCI sums up the latest thinking on competitiveness and captures the complexity of the economic growth by taking into account a weighted average of many different components, each of which reflects one aspect of the complex reality of competitivess."

All these THEs are not unique, they are some general concepts.

The indefinite article would not work in any of those examples.

Why? You see, I need some generalisation, a rule, to be able to create correct sentences on my own. So, why "The indefinite article would not work in any of those examples."? And check the following: "Lee Kuan Yew summoned his compatriots to a duty they had never previously perceived". "A duty" here is close to examples above. But there is stiil indefinite articel. Why not the?
