    Hardly ever made it

“We raised chickens and hogs. We had a single milk cow and planted enough vegetables to get by,” he told her. “Hardly ever made it to the hard road, about three miles walk up a dirt path."
The last sentence is difficult for me: who "hardly ever made it"? While "it" I suppose is the three miles walk up.

    Re: Hardly ever made it

The family rarely managed to walk the three miles to the nearest paved road.

    Re: Hardly ever made it

"Make it to" a place is an idiom (mainly AmE I think) that means "manage to get" to the place. Of course the place can be metaphorical. You can make it to Carnegie Hall, for example, if you practice enough.
