Re: Even now/then and even so

Q1: The last attempt to swim the Channel ended in disaster. ....... , more swimmers than ever are training to achieve this difficult feat.
    1- Even so
    2- Even now/ then

Q2: Peace could come only gradually, in carefully measured steps. ......... it sounds almost impossible to achieve.
    1- Even so
    2- Even now/then

Re: Even now/then and even so

If I knew the answer, I wouldn't ask you. Are you testing me?. I'm in a quandary and have no clue about them. As a matter of fact, I don't understand the nuanced difference between these contrast words.

Re: Even now/then and even so

Q1 'even so' — meaning 'despite that' or 'nevertheless'.

Q2 'even then' — meaning 'even allowing for the slowness of the steps'.

'Wigan won the FA Cup last season. I find it hard to believe even now (in spite of the passage of time).'
