    Past Perfect vs Past Simple

    Hi, everyone!

I need some help with the following:

Carol: How did the baking go?

    1) Carol asked Bob how the baking HAD GONE. (the Past Perfect)
    2) Carol asked Bob how the baking WENT. (the Past Simple)

To me it seems the first one is not incorrect. Is it possible to use the second variant? Thank you.

Re: Past Perfect vs Past Simple

The first is correct, and is what many coursebook exercises seem to expect.

The second is possible, especially in informal speech. Many native speakers use the past perfect far more sparingly than some coursebook writers would have learners believe.

They are both right in colloquial English. But if the intention is to test your understanding of back shifting in tense with reported speech, then of course you need to choose 1.
Remember, back shifting is never wrong in this situation.
