He joined a union when he started to work. ( Why "a" is used instead of "the"?)

There are many unions.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
All we know at the moment is that he joined one of the many unions available to workers. If he started a job where only one union was open to him, then he not only joined a union, but he joined the union.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
