    Pronoun "this"

    Dear teachers,

What does the pronoun "this" in the following paragraph refer to?

Our culture is the system we use to build our identity. All living creatures are part of a culture, even animals! So what is culture? It is the way we behave in a group. It begins with each individual family and the things we do to build connections and relationships with our other family members. This can include routines for doing things, or traditions that are repeated on a regular basis.

    a) things we do to build relationships
    b) the beginning of an individual family
    c) behaving in a group
    d) living creatures as a part of culture

    Thanks.

No !!!!!!! In options, items "a" and "c" seem to to be the answer. I would like to know whci one is more suitable. My choice is "a" because it is the sentece before "this" and I think "a" could be the answer.
