What does 'no less' mean here?

What does 'no less' mean in the following sentence? 'No less' than what?

Recent scholarship has turned up references to a game with stick and ball called “bass ball” in late 18th century England – often played by women, no less -- and perhaps something similar a bit earlier in Germany.

In that use, "no less" is an idiom indicating that something is surprising. The writer is surprised that women often played this game.

My husband made dinner for me last night -- steak and lobster, no less.
