    tell us about your household

    This is a part of the detective novel "The Red-headed League". When asked about his family situation, why did he answer about his business? Is the question or the answer wrong?

    21)...."And now, Mr. Wilson, tell us about your household."
    "I have a small pawnbroker's business. I can afford to keep only one assistant, Vicent Spaulding. He is willing to come for half wages, so as to learn the business"....

    The first sentence explains why there is only one other person around. I assume Wilson lives alone above his place of work.
