    Exclamation draw a line

A year after that Cup treble, they finished runners-up, but then fell away to fifth after Gérard brought in El Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao and Bruno Cheyrou, from which many commentators drew a line of cause and effect.

    What conveys the underlined phrase?
Draw a line of cause and effect?

"drew a line of cause and effect".

Commentators made a direct connection (drew a line) between the bringing in of those new players (the cause) and the resulting decline in the club's success (the effect). The suggestion is that the new players were not good enough to maintain the club's success.
