    sign

What does mean "sign" here, If does mean they saiad, they annunce or what?
Actually I'm in trouble with the sentence that comes after "it was..." it's the object of the previous sentence?

If someone scored against United they would be signed: it was that kind of short-term thinking.

    Re: sign

Or in other words, United would sign them as their new player.
