    Index card signifier

    Hi,

I would like to know what does "index-card signifiers" mean.

Most sex scenes in movies are index-card signifiers, giving visual evidence of the fact that the characters have sex at a given point in the story but not actually showing much of significance about the sexual relationship. Thus—to pick an example now on screens—the banal sex scenes between the characters played by Vincent Lindon and Chiara Mastroianni in Claire Denis’s “Bastards.”

    Thank you.

    (Not a Teacher)

The author actually tells you what it means: "...giving visual evidence of the fact that the characters have sex at a given point in the story but not actually showing much of significance about the sexual relationship."

It's like getting to an important chapter in a book only to discover that the entire chapter has been torn out and an index card with a brief summary has been left in its place.

    Re: Index card signifier

An index card (Index card - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) was used in business to record a small amount of information; perhaps the writer is saying that most sex scenes are equivalent to an index card in that they just give you a small amount of information signifying what happened; they don't go into detail.

I as a native had to give it some thought, perhaps because I was brought up with computers and so never used such a system.
