The use of pronouns after "of" when expressing possession (e.g a friends of "mine")

    Hi everyone,

I feel confused by the variety of ways to express "possession". Are the following phrases or sentences grammatical?

    1.
    (a) his death is... (b)the death of him is... (c)the death of his is...

    2.
    (a) He is my brother's friend. (b) He is a friend of my brother. (c) He is a friend of my brother's.

    3.
    (a) his book (b) a book of his (c) a book of him

    Thank you very much!

    1. C is wrong. B is unusual.
    2. All OK, but I dislike C.
    3. C is incorrect.

He is a friend of my brother's.

This is common and natural in BrE.
