    Echoing and sounding

    I don't understand why "echoing" and "sounding" in the two sentences below are proper english, wouldn't they need to be in the simple past tense "echoed" and "sounded"? Thanks!

    A handful of scientists moved briskly about, their footsteps echoing in the resonant space
    “Not surprising,” Kohler replied, his clipped response sounding harshly efficient.

    As written, both -ing words are present participles introducing participial phrases.

    If you change them to past tense verbs, you will create separate sentences. Then the punctuation will have to be changed. "English" needs to be capitalized.
