I hope he will phone/I hope he phones

    Hi everyone!

I have 2 sentences from Cambridge English Vocabulary in Use:

    1. Jack hopes his girlfriend WILL (FUTURE) phone him soon.
    2. I hope my friend FEELS (PRESENT SIMPLE better soon.

    The question is:
Can I use Present Simple as well in the first sentence to talk about the future after "hope"? "Jack hopes his girlfriend phones him soon."
To be honest I see no difference between these two sentences, then why are they using WILL in sentence N1 and Present Simple in N2?

    Thank you.

To be honest I see no difference between these two sentences, then why are they using WILL in sentence N1 and Present Simple in N2? There are several ways to talk about the future.

    Thank you.
