was met with failure/ met with failure

His attempt to commit suicide was met with failure
    or
His attempt to commit suicide met with failure.

Which structure of the two is correct or are they both correct?

Re: was met with failure/ met with failure

IMO, the fact of it being an attempt needs no further explanation. I mean, had he been successful, you would simply say "He committed suicide".

However, if you still want to phrase it in that way, I prefer #2.

    Hi,
The first one is a little strange to me. Because 'was met' implies that someone or something met him.
If I were you, I would say: "His attempt to commit suicide failed"
    Your second sentence is correct.
