Lightbulb past simple with time expression like Today

Is it wrong to use past simple with Today in this sentence? "She didn't go to school today, because she is ill."
    Thank you.

No, the word is fine. The comma after "today" isn't.

    I'd have a comma there.

    That's the thing about commas.

She didn't go to school today because she was ill. She went because she wasn't ill!

Suppose she is still ill now (might be in the evening, do we use '...she was ill'?

    Thanks.

"She didn't go to school today. She's ill."

The use of "She's" (meaning "She is") shows that the sickness situation is ongoing.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

"She is ill, so she didn't go to school today." There's no ambiguity there.
