    Reported Speech

    Hello,

I've read a book that says that when we report a statement in simple present, it has to go to simple past.

    For example:

Kate: "I like to exercise in the morning".

Reported: Kate said that she liked to exercise in the morning.

    However, I'd say:

Kate said that she likes to exercise in the morning.

    Am I making a mistake?
    Not a teacher.

Not really. The "rule" that is usually quoted regarding indirect speech is oversimplified. In your case, the past tense is not wrong, but if you have reason to believe that Kate continues to like to exercise in the morning, the present tense is also correct -- and may be even better.
