Unhappy the grades had become 'reified' and turned into a 'fetish'

    Hello there,

I don't understand this paragraph at all, please help.

"If my Marxist and postmodernist professors were to turn the barrel of their lingo away from capitalism and instead point it at their own noses, they'd say the grades had become 'reified' and turned into a 'fetish', a 'simulacrum' of reality. And who wants that?"

Can anyone explain to me in simple English? Thank you.

Here is a definition of "reify" (not a very commonly used word) Collins English Dictionary | Always Free Online
Now you can look up any of the words you don't understand and see if that helps you to make sense of the passage.

You also need the wider context- what are the grades mentioned?

The writer talks about grading in schools. The full paragraph reads:

"In a typical college course, grading becomes the focus of the course, with little attention paid to how the object of the grading relates to your life outside of the course. If my Marxist and postmodernist professors were to turn the barrel of their lingo away from capitalism and instead point it at their own noses, they'd say the grades had become 'reified' and turned into a 'fetish', a 'simulacrum' of reality. And who wants that?"

    Thank you.

Re: the grades had become 'reified' and turned into a 'fetish'

The meaning and use of the learning experience has been lost and replaced with the quest for good grades.

Re: the grades had become 'reified' and turned into a 'fetish'

I understand the main idea but it's still unclear to me what "fetish" here means, to the postmodernist, an obsession? like you said, the quest for good grades? to create a thing that doesn't really exist, or only exists in their own mind?

    Thank you.

I would take it to be definition 2 here:

fetish - definition. American English definition of fetish by Macmillan Dictionary

Grades are seen not as evidence of having studied well and being equipped to apply the learning in real life, but as something special and magical to be obtained, and obtaining them gives special powers to the person.
