    What should I use here?

    Hello,

How can I join these two sentences:

    John was the army leader

The empire grew larger under his leadership ?

shall I write: John was the army leader who the empire grew larger under his leadership or is there a better way?

    thanks a lot

Try "and". "John was the army leader, and the empire grew larger under his leadership."

ronaldo, please note that a better title would have been 'John was the army leader....'

No. Suppose there were four leaders of several armies. The empires of all four each differed. One grew larger, one stayed at a steady size, one grew smaller, and one lost his empire entirely. Then you could say 'John was the army leader whose empire grew larger under his leadership' - it's a defining relative clause.
