    the faith they profess

    1. Does "profess" here mean "belong to" or "argue that they believe Christianity or buddism or something"?
2.What does name the gospels mean?

6)I think the world has two classes of men and women when it comes to religion. One class is those who live the faith they profess. The other class is those who claim to follow a religion of love and compassion but do not....Only a few people can name the gospels on which their belief is based....

    Re: the faith they profess

    1. Profess means to declare or affirm a belief in something
    2. The "gospels" are the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The first 4 books in the New Testament. They tell the story of Jesus and his life and teachings. Followed by Acts, a book telling what happened to the early church after Jesus ascended to Heaven. The other books in the New Testament are the epistles, which are letters written by various Apostles (mostly Paul) to the churches of that time. And then Revelation, which is its own kind of apocalyptic book.

The person who wrote that bit about 'name the gospels' was obviously a Christian. A few hundred years ago, the Roman Catholic Church (the only Christian church at the time) took four accounts of the life of Christ and recognized them as the four gospels (which, along with the epistles and some other stuff) formed 'the New Testament'). There were other accounts of the life of Christ, also called 'gospels', but the Church didn't recognize them as divinely inspired. There was, I believe, for example, a 'Gospel of St Peter'. But the writer of your 'name the gospels' sentence may not have known this and probably (very probably) meant the ones listed by SD.

PS Just checked: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Peter . The key word is 'canonical'. The four listed by SD are the canonical gospels.

Some would argue that there was more than one Christan church at the time. The Coptic Church, for example, claims to trace its foundation back to before the middle of the first century CE.
