Does the use of BUT make sense?

    Dear all,

"When we see an unknown word, we look in a dictionary. But dictionaries don't just give the meaning of a word. They tell us the pronunciation and grammar too, and sometimes a word's history. We can..."

This is the beginning of a passage in an English textbook published for Japanese high school students. Does the "but" in bold make sense? I think the first sentence should be replaced by another one like the following example in order to make the discourse cohesive.

"Dictionaries are used to check the meaning of an unknown word. But they don't just give the meaning of a word. They tell us the pronunciation and grammar too, and sometimes a word's history. We can..."

I would like to know if the original passage is fine, or my alternative sounds better.

    Thank you!

    OP

The original would work better for me if it said we look it up in a dictionary.
