    with the expression given them

The semantics and grammar of adverbials
    [...]
We shall distinguish seven main categories of semantic role, in most cases with further subdivision as shown in the table below.
    [...]
    Space, time, process, [...]

Detailed discussion of these categories will be reserved for the sections dealing with the expression given them by the various classes of adverbials, 8.39ff.

(A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language; Randolph Quirk)

Would you be so kind to tell me whether 'them' refers to 'categories' here?

(I also think 'expression' here should mean 'the stylistic characteristics of an utterance'.)

    Thanks.

Re: with the expression given them

Quirk was writing quite some time ago*. I think you're right in identifying 'expression' as the root of your uncertainty. It refers to more of a process than it does in current English. In that sense, 'Adverbials give expression to categories.' (So you're right about 'them' referring to 'categories'.)

PS The expression is 'Would you be so good as to...'

    * PPS That Longmans book is quite recent, but it an updated edition written by other scholars. Quirk himself is in his 90s now (if he's alive).

He is still alive - at least, he was at 19.00 GMT on 25 November, 2013. He is 93.
