    were OR became

When she was a young girl, she used to wish she ..... a princess.

    1. were
    2. was
    3. is
    4. became

    What's wrong with "became" here?

It's tragically wrong given that you have 1 and 2 to choose from.
I'd say that any test giving you a choice of three versions of the verb "to be" plus one different one is inviting you to discard the different one unless you're sure that all the versions of "to be" are clearly wrong.

    Re: were OR became

You mean "were" and "was"? Ok. This test belongs to Toefl PBT. I don't know why we can't use became here. (Wish + past tense)

I agree with you about discarding the different one. :)

    Re: were OR became

To use 'become' or 'became' you have to recast the sentence.

'...she used to wish she could become a princess'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the object of these tests is to select the most correct answer. There are often more than one that could work, but one is less natural. So even if X. is the correct answer, it still might be vaguely possible to use Y.
In any case, as Rover has explained, 'became' is wrong, so that is not the case here.
