In a sports article:

( sports.yahoo.com/news/nba-to-fine-jason-kidd--50-000-for-spilled-drink-stunt-003042479.html )
"The NBA will fine Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd $50,000 for dropping a cup of soda on the floor in order to manipulate extra time in Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers, sources told Yahoo Sports."

This usage of "manipulate" seems to mean "obtain something by use of manipulation", but I couldn't find such a sense for "manipulate" in dictionaries. Could this be an error?

This is "manipulate" in the sense of "control or influence something deviously".
Definition #2: Collins English Dictionary | Always Free Online
So the coach was trying to influence the extra time situation by devious means.
