What happened in the underlined? I know what "street sign" is, but not "street sign lines".

-Smoky night.
...some of the street lights have been smashed. We walk along the sidewalk, which sparkles with broken glass. There are empty cartons everywhere. A street sign lines crumpled in the gutter. I grab hold of Mama...

not a teacher

It's a mistake. It should be "A street sign lies crumpled in the gutter".
I've found the original text by Eve Bunting, which confirms this.

Keannu, what's happened to your concentration? In the first paragraph of your post, you mis-spelled "sign" twice and "happened" once.

In that case, congratulations! But what on earth are you doing on the forum?! Whilst your dedication to English study is impressive, for goodness' sake, take a few days away from it to enjoy the new arrival!:-D

Don't make keannu get his priorities mixed up, ems. It is refreshing to see that there are still some people who realise that English grammar is more imprortant than trivia such as births of children, wars, flood, famine, plague, etc.

Congratulations, keannu. Now, back to work!
