    Nobody I asked (saw/had seen) anyone do it?!

    There was a big canvas suitcase which somebody had left but nobody I asked ------ anyone leave it there.

    Saw or had seen should fill the gap?

    You could use either in that sentence. What features of the simple past and the past perfect would you consider in deciding which to use?
