"Inform your parents that you are going on an excursion next week," the teacher told his pupils.

I have reported the speech as follows. Which words in bold should I use? Thanks.

The teacher told his pupils that they were going on an excursion the next week/the following week.

However, excursions require permission forms, so this sentence never actually occurs.
