Is there any evidence that Stephanied read the book last night? It could be early this morning. For 2, even though there is no word "promise", it can be inferred. The answers are all confusing..What do you think?

Q. Which doesn't belong?
23)Stephanie would be late again! Now she was sorry that she read for such a long time, but the book was so absorbing she could not put it down. She grabbed the last bite of the sandwich her mother made for breakfast. She dashed out of the house. In the driveway, she jumped on her bike and started to pedal as fast as she could. She remembered when she got the bike for Christmas last year, it was such a surprise. She knew that her mother could not afford it, but she bought it for her anyway. It was a beautiful blue and shiny bike. She was so grateful to her mother..

1. She read the book for a long time last night.
2. Her mother kept the promise to buy her a bike.

The two answers you have given are not confusing. They are simply not completely accurate versions of things we are told in the text.

You can't assume that her mother had promised to buy her a bike. It specifically says that the bike was a surprise so I would assume she had no idea she was going to get it.

Exactly. If the mother had made much a promise, it could not have been a surprise.

Usually people read into the night. Not many children wake up early enough before school to have time to read. It's not an impossible interpretation, but not at all likely.

The only part of number 1 which is not explicitly mentioned is "last night". The fact that she read a book for a long time is stated in the original. From the rest of it, we know that she is eating breakfast and that she is going to be late because she read a book for a long time. It is possible that she started reading the book when she woke up and it made her late for breakfast and therefore late for wherever she is going next. We cannot definitively say that the reading of the book took place last night.
