Red face A few Grammar Test Questions

    1. Few films have had --- an influence on American history as Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.
    a. greater
    b. such great
    c. great enough
    d. as great
    e. the greatest

First I thought the structure asked was '' as great influence as '' but there is an ''an'' there. I think it is beacuse of the apostophe s next to Welles.
    I'm choosing ''d'' anyway.

    2. Kalevala is a Finnish epic poem, named for three sons of Kalevala, or Finland, --- adventures the poem describes.
    a. which
    b. where
    c. that
    d. whose
    e. whom

I have no ideas but just because relative clause is used to describe a place I'm going with ''b''. I don't know what the sentence want to convey either.

    3. Jerusalem is perhaps the most important city for the Christian World, --- one of the most beautiful cities in the World.
    a. due to
    b. furthermore
    c. despite
    d. as well as
    e. in addition to

It is probably b or d. But, I think there should be a whole sentence after furthermore. And so I'm choosing d.

    4. Mariah became suspicious of every sound she heard after she had sued the man WHO tried to break into her house since she is afraid he will commit to --- her.
    a. drop off
    b. turn in
    c. get back at
    d. hold back
    e. make up

Get back at and hold back look closer to me but as d should be used like hold sb back, I'm going with c.

I know I have written many questions but I need some help.
    Thanks everyone beforehand!

Re: A few Grammar Test Questions

2 is wrong; the rest are right. Try again.

In future please ask only one question per thread, with a title relevant to each, such as Kalevala is a Finnish epic poem...

    Extract from the Posting Guidelines:

'Thread titles should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.'

    Yes, "as great" is correct.

    2. Kalevala is a Finnish epic poem, named for three sons of Kalevala, or Finland, --- adventures the poem describes.

It's not about a place, it's about the three sons. Since it is about people we use "whose". The sentence is about the adventures of three people.

    3. Jerusalem is perhaps the most important city for the Christian World, --- one of the most beautiful cities in the World.
    a. due to
    b. furthermore
    c. despite
    d. as well as
    e. in addition to

It can't be B as B would require "it is" - "Furthermore it is one...". D is the answer.

    4. Mariah became suspicious of every sound she heard after she had sued the man WHO tried to break into her house since she is afraid he will commit to --- her.
    a. drop off
    b. turn in
    c. get back at
    d. hold back
    e. make up

"hold back" doesn't make any sense here. To hold back is to not give something. "get back at" indicates revenge, to harm someone for what they did in the past.

I know I have written many questions but I need some help.
    Thanks everyone beforehand!
