"Housewife" is not really used anymore. It was determined to be offensive, dismissive.

You do see "stay-at-home mom," so I guess "stay-at-home dad" would be OK.

"Househusband" is used.

It means that the person in question does not work outside the home.

It seems to me that while the word 'housewife' is offensive to some, many women still proudly bear that title. "Homemaker' has become an acceptable alternative.

I have certainly heard "househusband" but I think "full-time dad" or "stay-at-home dad" is more common.

The idea behind "stay-at-home" is that you don't go into an office. Of course it does not mean you never leave the house.

You can't use XXX "mom/mum/dad" unless the person has children. There are plenty of childless people who don't go out to work.

Why I should have married for money instead of love.
