for mother was coming, and everyone brightened to welcome her

    It's me gain!

As usual, I started looking for something on the Internet and ended up finding something completely different.

Somehow the sight of the old shoes had a good effect upon the girls, for Mother was coming, and everyone brightened to welcome her.

In my opinion, the fragment in question means "because mother was coming, and everyone was eager to welcome her" or "because mother was coming, and everyone wanted very much to welcome her".

What is your opinion on that?

    Thank you.

It looks like they cheered up at the sight of the old shoes, which put them in a mood to welcome her.
