    prevent/avoid

    Merry Christmas!
There is an extract from the test "Piranhas" from this site (Testing<Reading comprehension<First Certificate in English):"...so forming a shoal is a good way of avoiding/preventing being killed."
The correct form is "avoiding" but It seems to me that "avoid" and "prevent" are similar in this meaning and they both are used with -ing. According to the dictionaries "from" can be omitted with "prevent" (prevent (from) doing something).
    So what is the difference?
    Thank you in advance .

    "preventing being" doesn't work.

    Re: prevent/avoid

You could prevent someone (from) being killed, but you'd need an object.
