    a man / the man

    On walking to school, I sawa man who was asking people for money. On walking to school, I saw the man who was asking people for money.
    Which one is more acceptable in colloquial language?

    If it is the first time you have mentioned this man, then use a man.

    Also, I would say When (I was) walking to school.
