    the *elder

In two letters to the historian Tacitus, the nephew of Pliny the elder
wrote the only eyewitness account of the great eruption of Vesuvius.

Qestion?: Is the noun phrase " the Elder“ necessary to appear here?
And what does it indicate? In my own opinion, the noun phrase is unnecessary and redundant,
so it should be left out. Am I right?

    Thanks for your help!

It's necessary. Pliny the Younger, the nephew of Pliny the Elder was also famous. These terms are used by a few other people where more than one in the family is famous. See: William Pitt the Younger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
