    Brideshead "Revisited"

    Dear all,

I just read a novel titled "Brideshead Revisited," and I am keen to know the difference in meaning between "Brideshead Revisited" and "The Revisit of Brideshead." Which word is the subject in both sentences? Is revisited in the first title a verb or an adj? I am really confused and hope to understand the nuances.

    Thank you all in advance.

    James

    Re: Brideshead "Revisited"

Neither the title nor your alternative are sentences. There is no verb in either, and in a title there doesn't need to be.

The book is about going back to Brideshead at a later date, or 'revisiting' the mansion.

    Re: Brideshead "Revisited"

    Hi Rover,

Thank you for reminding me that verb is not needed in a title. But could you also kindly explain why "revisited" is used here. Is it a kind of inversion?

Thank you again for your help.

    James

    Re: Brideshead "Revisited"

It's a neater way of saying 'visited again'.
