    Please someone check

Good day to everyone! Pls help me. Pls check my grammar...

In the most awaited Teachers-Students tandem, the third year group had shown talent in dancing which resulted in retaining their being champion in the said event.

    Pls help me.
    Thank you very much!

    most awaited- eagerly awaited
    had shown - showed
which resulted in retaining their being champion in the said event- this is a bit wordy for me. How about:
which meant that they remain champions in this event

    Re: Please someone check

The past sounds better to me after the time phrase implied at the start of the sentece- it flows, rather than setting a scene and jumping backwards.
