    male vis-a-vis for old maid

    Hi,

I just learned "old maid", and I am curious whether or not there is a male vis-a-vis for old maid? I mean I refer to an older man who keeps single. Does old bachelor work?

She stays at home everyday. Shell be an old maid if she refuses to meet boys.

    Many thanks!

One can speak of a "confirmed bachelor."

Note that there was none of the social stigma to this that was attached to a woman who could not find a husband.

In BrE, confirmed bachelor was once used, at least sometimes, as a euphemism for gay.

Thank you both for your replies.

Dave, I noticed you used past tense in your words. Do you mean today it is a social stigma?

I don't think he meant that.
