    I cannot get the meaning

He was under the impression that Roberts had got the various contribution for nothing.

Question: I asked some Chinese, but no one can translate the sentence.
In my understanding, Roberts got many kinds of contribution(some things or money) for no reason, but “the translation” made me feel very strange or weird, thus at last I cannot understand the sentence.

How to understand the sentence? What on earth is the meaning of for nothing?
    Many thanks to dear teachers!!!

Re: I cannot get the meaning

It might mean 'for no reason' or 'without charge'/'free'.

Thanks a lot!!! But I still feel puzzled.

In my opinion, Roberts may encountered a disaster or his family is really poor and so on, so he got contributions/help from others.
And if there was no reason, why could he get contributions from others?
It puzzled me... ... Is my opinion wrong? Or is the sentence too unimaginable?

Re: I cannot get the meaning

It's impossible to say what happened without more context.

Re: I cannot get the meaning

I think your interpretting it right.
It is a little confusing to me too.
I would think that it means Robert got help or a donation, and Robert did not have to give anything in return for receiving this donation.
For example: If Robert encountered a disaster and as a result he was starving, people may give him free food and expect nothing in return (for nothing= he got food and did not have to pay for it).

I can translate it into Chinese, but I don't know whether writing Chinese is in contravention of the forum rules.

It is unlikely that "for nothing" means "for no reason" here.
It is very likely that "for nothing" means "at no cost."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
