raised the heads/ held high the heads

Which of these sentences is correct English? Any suggestions?

    1. As a Nobel laureate, he raised the heads of all Americans and made them well known all over the world.

    2. As a Nobel laureate, he held high the heads of all Americans and made them well known all over the world.
